Ingredients

  • 1 pound green beans fresh, trimmed
  • 1 tablespoon oil neutral oil like canola or vegetable
  • ½ teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (optional) for a spicy kick
  • zest of 1 lemon lemon zest brightens flavor
  • ¼ cup parmesan freshly grated, optional

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Mixing bowl
  • Tongs or spatula

Method

  1. Start by trimming the ends off the green beans and patting them dry thoroughly to remove excess moisture—this step helps them crisp up better.
  2. Place the green beans in a mixing bowl and drizzle with a tablespoon of oil. Toss gently to evenly coat all the beans with the oil, which helps achieve that crispy texture.
  3. Add half a teaspoon of salt and, if you like a little heat, sprinkle in chili flakes. Toss again to distribute the seasonings evenly.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (390°F). While it heats, arrange the green beans in a single layer inside the basket, ensuring they aren't overcrowded so they can crisp evenly.
  5. Cook the green beans in the air fryer for 8 to 10 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through to turn the beans and promote even browning. You’ll hear a gentle crackling sound as they crisp up.
  6. Check the beans—they should be golden brown with slightly charred edges and crispy on the outside. If they need a little more crunch, add an extra minute and continue cooking.
  7. Remove the beans from the air fryer and transfer them to a serving dish. Sprinkle with lemon zest for brightness and freshly grated parmesan for an umami boost, if desired.
  8. Give them a quick toss to distribute the toppings evenly, then serve immediately while they’re still warm and crispy for the best texture.
